A cake serving count means nothing without the slice beside it

A 12 inch round cake serves 56 people. It also serves 37. Both are correct: the first is at wedding portions and the second at party portions, and almost nobody says which. That single ambiguity is the most common error in cake decorating, and it is why every number on this site carries the convention that produced it.

The cake area is a derived figure from the pan dimensions. The slice footprint is a trade convention, and it is the only reason these three columns differ. Height does not change any of them: a taller cake gives taller slices, not more of them.

Printed by a manufacturer, a standards body or a university extension service, and cited on the page. Mixer capacities, tempering ranges, altitude adjustments, bundt pan capacities.

Convention

How the trade does it, with no physical law behind it. Portion sizes, filling a pan two thirds full, crumb coat thickness, starting bake times. Shops differ, so the assumption is always stated.

Where none of the three applies, a page says the figure is not established rather than supplying one. Bake times here are computed estimates from pan geometry with the formula shown, not tested times. Nothing on this site is hands-on testing, and none of it is professional advice.
